Emerson College Virtual and Augmented Reality is a research initiative which focus on the development of the technologies, the methodology and the content for truly immersive and navigable virtual experiences, based in real places around the world using emergent forms of virtual and augmented reality. Technologies, both hardware and software are used, and/or developed when none exists, to create virtual and augmented reality content. The initiative includes robust exhibition program, where the public can experience the work being done in immersive VR installations, on headsets, and on location at exact GPS coordinates using mobile devices. This spatial approach to narrative structure is a fundamental departure from all traditional linear story forms such as literature, theater, cinema etc. Spatial narrative requires new story construction methodologies. The story unfolds across space, rather than over time. The technologies and methodologies are developed in the context of the creation of original content. The goal is the invention of new forms of art and media.
